Police Officer and Sex with Prostitute at School
A ten year veteran of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department is charged with having sex with a prostitute at a school. The police officer, James Ingalls, is accused of paying a 39 year old prostitute for sex. Ingalls allegedly took the prostitute to a school where he provided security services while off-duty. The school was closed at the time of the sex act, which took place in the nurses office. According to the prostitute, who is the only witness and the one who reported the incident to police, Ingalls told her, “even though he was a police officer, he was a man and had needs,” the affidavit says. She futher stated that she and Ingalls had sex on approximtely 4 different occassions, each time costing Ingalls approximately $40. Ingalls is further accused of notifying this same woman about the times and locations of police prostitution sweeps. Ingalls is currently on suspension, pending the outcome of the investigation and legal proceedings.
As a police officer, Ingalls is sworn to uphold the law. What part of this oath was he not clear about? How can a police officer committ a crime one hour and arrest others for committing a crime the next hour. Far too often, we hear about cops gone bad. From drug deals to murder, why do police officers break the law. From a psychological perspective, and in light of the intense screening police applicants are exposed to, should there not be some red flags. If the test results and psychological indicators or benchmarks are the same for both the good cops and the bad cops, why spend the time or money to test anyone.
- How common do you think the above situation is in the law enforcement community?
- Are cops above the law and what percentage of cops do you think routinely break the same laws they’re sworn to uphold?
- Should police officers spend more time behind bars than others who committ the same crime?
- Have you had any dealings with a “cop gone bad”?
