The Luxury of Welfare

Today news agencies reported that Florida may adopt a law that would require people on unemployment to submit to random drug testing.  Personally, I don’t think this is the answer to our unemployment problem. I do think that there needs to be better oversight at the local level.  I’m a businessman and it’s amazing how unorganized our unemployment office is.  How can a former employee who quit without notice two years ago even be considered for unemployment benefits?  Money spent on drug testing could be better spent on improved administration of the welfare system.  More on this in a later post, or visit http://www.nakedgator.com/politics-politicians/unemployment-compensation/

Thinking of drug testing for the unemployed led me to think about the plight of those on welfare.  If we really want to crack down on the abuse of government assistance, someone needs to start at welfare.  Here’s my opinion:

• If you live on welfare, you will not have a cellular phone, cable TV, internet access, a new car or $135 tennis shoes
• If you live on welfare, you WILL BE tested for drugs.  Any positive test result will exclude you from receiving welfare for one year
• If you live on welfare, you will not be an alcoholic.  If you are an alcoholic, you will not receive welfare until you sober up
• If you live on welfare, you will not bear anymore children

I could certainly continue with this list, but I think I’ve made my point clear.  You and I are paying for many people to choose to live on welfare.  Why, because it’s free!  Granted, there are people with medical conditions that may not be able to provide for themselves, but most I think are capable of living without government assistance. 

For those who choose to, for whatever reason, use my money to live on, they should not have the same luxuries that I have.  Welfare recipients will live with the bare necessities necessary to sustain life and, those caught with anything more, will be excluded from the welfare program.
